Car Rental in Seattle: When to Rent and How to Do It Right

Seattle is one of those cities where you genuinely don’t need a car for the first day or two - the Link Light Rail connects Sea-Tac Airport to Capitol Hill, the University District, and downtown in under 40 minutes, and the city’s Pike Place / waterfront / Pioneer Square core is walkable. But the Pacific Northwest surrounding Seattle is extraordinary: Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park, the San Juan Islands ferry towns, the Cascade Mountain passes, and the North Cascades are all within reach and all require wheels. A rental makes immediate sense for anyone spending more than 48 hours in the region.

Airport Pickup (SEA - Seattle-Tacoma International)

Sea-Tac Airport has a consolidated Rental Car Facility connected to the main terminal via a dedicated shuttle bus (free, departs from Level 3 of the baggage claim building every few minutes). The facility houses all major companies: Hertz, Enterprise, National, Avis, Budget, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, Sixt, and Fox.

Sea-Tac is approximately 14 miles south of downtown Seattle - 25–40 minutes in normal traffic, up to an hour during the afternoon rush.

Downtown Seattle Pickups

Enterprise, Hertz, and National have city-centre offices near Capitol Hill, South Lake Union, and downtown. If you’re spending 2–3 days in the city before heading on a road trip, picking up downtown avoids the airport premium. Downtown offices may not have as wide a fleet selection as the airport.

Washington State and King County add several layers:

Total overhead typically adds 40–50% to the base rate - Washington’s high sales tax makes it one of the more expensive fee environments in the western US. A $60/day booking can land at $90+ all-in.

Insurance

Washington State requires minimum liability coverage. Standard US auto policies extend to rentals - confirm yours does and that it extends to mountain/off-highway driving if you plan trails. Non-US visitors should take the CDW ($20–$32/day at SEA). Many premium credit cards include rental coverage - worth checking before arrival.

Note: if you plan off-road or gravel road driving (some forest roads near the Cascades), most CDW and credit card rental coverage excludes unpaved roads. Read the fine print.

Driving in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest

Seattle’s street grid is irregular due to hills and water - navigation apps are essential. Key routes:

• I-5: The main north-south interstate; runs through the city centre; congested from Northgate to SoDo from 6:30–9am and 3:30–6:30pm
• I-90: The main east-west route over the Cascades toward Ellensburg and Eastern Washington; Snoqualmie Pass (elevation 3,022 feet) is closed to chains-required and traction-only conditions in winter
• US-2 (Stevens Pass): Northern alternate route over the Cascades; scenic but narrower
• SR-99 (Aurora Avenue / Pacific Highway): North-south surface alternative to I-5 through the city
• SR-2 / US-101: Access routes to Olympic Peninsula

Washington’s Good To Go! toll system covers several highways and the 520 and 99 tunnels (under Elliott Bay). Rental companies offer transponder rental at $4–6/day; otherwise you’ll be billed by plate with processing fees.

Best and Worst Times to Rent

Best: November through February (grey Pacific Northwest winter keeps leisure tourists away; rates drop significantly). September after Labor Day. Midweek year-round.

Worst: Summer (July–August): this is the Pacific Northwest’s best weather season and the region’s peak tourism window. Mount Rainier, Olympic, and the San Juans are all slammed. Rates at SEA peak in mid-July. Book 4+ weeks out if traveling in summer.
