SXSW 2027

South by Southwest began in 1987 as a small music industry showcase in Austin, Texas. It has since grown into a ten-day convergence of three overlapping festivals — SXSW Music, SXSW Film and TV, and SXSW Interactive (tech and ideas) — running simultaneously across venues throughout downtown Austin each March. The 2027 edition runs March 7-16.

The three festivals

SXSW Music runs through the final six days of the event (approximately March 11-16) and is the largest music festival component by volume, with thousands of artists performing across 90-100 official venues ranging from amphitheatres to dive bars. Getting a music badge gives access to official showcases; unofficial shows (called “parties”) run in parallel and are often free.

SXSW Film and TV (running the first several days) covers feature films, short films, episodic series, and XR experiences, with premieres, Q&As, and screenings at venues across central Austin. Several films that premiered at SXSW have gone on to major distribution deals or awards recognition.

SXSW Interactive (first half of the event, centred on the Austin Convention Center) is the conference side of the festival — keynotes, panels, exhibitions, and networking focused on technology, innovation, design, and media.

Badges and access

SXSW operates on a badge system rather than individual tickets. A Platinum badge covers all three tracks; single-track badges (Music, Film, Interactive) cover their respective programming. Badges in recent years have ranged from approximately $700 to over $1,800 depending on type and purchase timing (as of 2026 pricing; earlier purchases are cheaper). Many events — particularly unofficial music shows and some public screenings — are free without a badge.

Practical tips

Austin in mid-March is pleasant: daytime highs typically reach 18-24°C with occasional rain. Downtown fills completely during SXSW, and accommodation prices rise sharply. Book 6 months in advance or consider staying north or east of downtown and taking rideshare.
