Washington DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival runs for nearly four weeks each spring, but the event everyone comes for is the peak bloom — the handful of days when the 3,000 Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin reach roughly 70% open blossoms and the entire waterfront turns pale pink. The peak typically falls somewhere between late March and mid-April. The National Park Service tracks blossom development and publishes a peak bloom forecast each year; check their site as the date approaches, since timing can shift by two weeks depending on winter weather.

The history behind the trees

The trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo in 1912 as a gesture of friendship, planted along the Tidal Basin by First Lady Helen Taft and the Japanese Ambassador’s wife. A second gift of 3,800 trees followed in 1965. The festival itself began in 1935 and now draws over 1.5 million visitors over its run.

What to expect during the festival

The official festival calendar includes a Blossom Kite Festival on the National Mall (typically in late March), a night-time illumination event at the Tidal Basin, cultural performances, and a parade. The Tidal Basin is free to visit at any time — there is no entry fee for the trees themselves. The most memorable experience is walking the 2-mile loop around the basin at dawn, before the crowds arrive.

Practical tips

The Tidal Basin area is heavily congested during peak bloom. Metro is strongly recommended: take the Blue or Orange line to Smithsonian station, then walk west. Parking nearby is extremely limited and traffic backups extend well into surrounding streets. Arrive before 8am for the best light and manageable crowds.

The festival coincides with some of DC’s best sightseeing weather. The monuments, the National Mall, and the free Smithsonian museums are all within walking distance of the Tidal Basin.
