Burning Man 2026

Burning Man is not a music festival. It is a temporary city built by 70,000 people in the Black Rock Desert of northwestern Nevada, then dismantled without a trace. Every year over the week straddling Labor Day weekend, participants — known as Burners — haul art, structures, food, and survival gear into one of the most inhospitable environments in North America to create Black Rock City from scratch.

The event runs on ten core principles, including radical self-reliance, gifting, and leaving no trace. There are no vendors inside the event perimeter: no food stalls, no bars selling drinks, no shops. You bring everything you need for the week. The economy inside the city runs entirely on gifts freely given between strangers.

What happens during the week

The main focal point is the playa — the cracked alkali flat at the centre of the city — which fills with large-scale art installations ranging from interactive sculptures to full architectural environments. The Mutant Vehicle Parade brings licensed art cars — elaborately modified vehicles disguised as everything from pirate ships to neon octopuses — circling the playa each night. Dozens of themed camps host music, workshops, performances, and communal meals.

The climax is the burn itself on Saturday night (August 5 in 2026), when the 40-metre wooden Man effigy at the centre of the city is set alight in front of the entire population. The Temple burn follows on Sunday — a quieter, more reflective occasion where participants leave offerings and written messages before it goes up in flames.

Tickets and logistics

The nearest gateway city is Reno, Nevada, roughly 120 miles south via US-447. Many Burners fly into Reno-Tahoe International Airport and rent vehicles or join rideshares. The drive in during peak arrival days (Friday and Saturday before the event opens) can involve queues of several hours.

What to bring

Survival basics are non-negotiable in the desert heat, which can reach 40°C in the afternoon and drop sharply after midnight. Bring far more water than you think you need — at least 1.5 gallons per person per day. A dust mask or respirator is essential; whiteout dust storms can arrive with almost no warning and reduce visibility to zero.
